ISLAMABAD – February 29 was welcomed this year as the “Leap Year” according to the Gregorian calendar across the globe including Pakistan as the day occurs every four years.
The reason why the leap year is celebrated is that it is synchronized with the astronomical or seasonal year and these events do not repeat in a whole number of days as a corrective measure, because the Earth does not orbit around the sun in precisely 365 days.
A year that is not a leap year is called a common year.For example, in the Gregorian calendar, each leap year has 366 days instead of the usual 365, by extending February to 29 days rather than thecommon 28.
A person who is born on February 29 may be called a leapling or a leap-year baby. In non-leap years, some leaplings celebrate their birthday on either February 28 or March 1, while others only observe birthdays on the authentic intercalary date, February 29.
